Description
Crafted from the oldest vines in our Carneros estate, this 100% Chardonnay honors the legacy of the 1973 Château Montelena Chardonnay, the wine that forever reshaped American winemaking and marking a point when boundaries shifted, expectations were rewritten, and excellence found a new home. Planted in 1989 and grown from heritage Wente clones gifted by Larry Hyde, these vines yield fruit of remarkable purity and nuance, beautifully expressing the Grgich Hills Estate signature. A tribute to both legacy and future, this single-vineyard Chardonnay celebrates history, stewardship, and the enduring character of Carneros.

Ivo Jeramaz
Winemaker, Grgich Hills Estate

Ivo Jeramaz was born into a Croatian family of grape growers and from an early age assisted in making wine as a familial pursuit. As a young man, he attended the University of Zagreb where he earned a master of science degree in engineering.
In 1986, Ivo came to the United States with the help of his uncle, Miljenko “Mike” Grgich. Ivo was so fascinated with the wine industry, especially set against the scenic beauty of the Napa Valley, that he decided on a career change – diving wholeheartedly into both personal study under the tutelage of his uncle, and a number of enology and viticulture classes at UC Davis.
His experience in winemaking now spans nearly four decades, and as the principal winemaker, Ivo has ushered Grgich Hills Estate into the future as an industry leader in regenerative farming and organic winemaking. Today, he fosters a passion akin to his own both within our vineyard and cellar teams, and at home, bringing his daughter Maja and his sons, Luke and Jake into the fold, exploring all facets of the industry, including, marketing, sales, and vineyard management.
Country born: Croatia
Education: Master of Science degree in engineering from the University of Zagreb
Enology and viticulture courses at the University of California, Davis
Mentored by his uncle, Miljenko "Mike" Grgich
Years in the wine industry: 30+ years
Winemaking Philosophy:
Mike Grgich taught me early in my career that you need great grapes to make great wine. Over the years, I've focused on working with the land. Through our natural farming, it's been very rewarding to seeing the soil alive with healthier plants than under conventional farming. It allows the wines to be more authentic, more distinctive.
