Description
Bound by Heritage celebrates one winemaker’s vision and two of Oakville’s most exceptional Cabernet Franc sites. Rooted in the historic 1949 Detert Vineyard planting in To Kalon, it honors Napa Valley’s original Cabernet Franc legacy. Complementing this, vines from Oakville Ranch bring volcanic intensity from the eastern ridge, merging power with elegance. The resulting wine marries old-world tradition with mountain-driven character, reflecting depth, balance, and grace. A tribute to history, rarity, and the distinctive terroirs of Oakville, Bound by Heritage captures the soul of Napa’s finest Cabernet Franc—a living legacy preserved in every bottle.

Tom Garrett
Winemaker, Dakota Shy & Detert Family Vineyards

Tom's family roots in Napa Valley stretch back to the early 1950s when his great-grandmother purchased a historic Oakville vineyard property within the famed To-Kalon Vineyard. 50 years later, Tom began Detert Family Vineyard wines, named after his great-grandmother and made from his family's Oakville vineyard. Over the past 15 years Tom honed his craft working alongside other great winemakers and mentors at Turley Wine Cellars, Joseph Phelps Winery, Robert Mondavi Winery and Revana Family Vineyard. Tom continues to make his family's highly regarded Detert wines.
Dakota Shy is a thrilling opportunity to work with a great friend and business partner and make wines from some of Napa Valley's most exceptional vineyard sources. With Dakota Shy, Tom is crafting Cabernets in league with the best in the valley and pushing the boundaries of quality and precision.

Winemaking Philosophy:
We are passionate about how we live, where we live and the wines and people that define our valley. We strive to make the greatest Cabernets we are capable of in order to showcase our appreciation for the land and legacy of Napa. Blessed with great friends and partners in the Napa Valley, we have been fortunate to assemble an outstanding portfolio of vineyards whose grapes are the foundation of our wines. Those vineyards and the people who work them are key to the outstanding quality we are able to put into bottle.
