Description

At its height fine wine creates connection. Between winemaker and vineyard site.Between a vine, its fruit, and its fermentation, alchemizing into wine. A symphony leading to the connection between those sharing a bottle and the winemaker who captured the harmony of place within it. Here are three winemakers legends in their craft devoted to tending to each site with integrity coming together to collaborate on a wine that will never exist again.

Rosemary Cakebread

Winemaker, Gallica, Corison, Matthiasson

Winemaker, Rosemary Cakebread

Rosemary Cakebread has earned a reputation for making wines of grace and balance with remarkable consistency across vintages. A graduate of University of California Davis’ Viticulture and Enology program, she was introduced to Cabernet Sauvignon at the historic Inglenook Vineyards. From early cellar jobs to a winemaking position with Spottswoode Vineyard and Winery, Rosemary has built her career around a love for wine. Her appreciation and interest in aromatics and blending was born from work with sparkling wine at Mumm Napa Valley. Of course, making wine also means logging hours and miles in the vineyard throughout the growing season. Rosemary can often be found where she most enjoys being- outdoors in the home vineyard or amongst the vines on the properties we are fortunate to collaborate with.

Nestled in the heart of Napa Valley, Gallica's inaugural vintage was the celebrated 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon. The philosophy is a simple one: to craft elegant single vineyard wines which accurately depict the site and story of each unique vintage. The brand symbol is a tribute to the ancient rose, their aromatics, and enhancement to winemaking. We love what we do and are fortunate to call Napa Valley home.

Cathy Corison

Winemaker, Gallica, Corison, Matthiasson

Winemaker, Cathy Corison

I've made wine in the Napa Valley for 40 years, first for others including Chappellet Vineyard, Staglin Family Vineyard, York Creek and Long Meadow Ranch. Eventually I found that there was a wine inside me that needed to get out and I began to make the Corison Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

MS University of California, Davis, Enology

Years in the wine industry: 30+ years

Honors / Awards:
San Francisco Chronicle Winemaker of the Year 2011

Winemaking Philosophy:
Great grapes make great wine. Pick ripe grapes from a terrific, balanced vineyard and let Mother Nature do the rest. My goal is to make Cabernet that is both powerful and elegant, graces the table, enjoys a long, distinguished life and speaks of place.

Steve Matthiasson

Winemaker, Gallica, Corison, Matthiasson

Winemaker, Steve Matthiasson

Years of working with different wineries on the vineyard side of the business has helped me understand the relationship between viticulture and wine. After a decade of exploring making wine from different grape varieties, vineyard sites, and farming techniques I started making our Matthiasson wines in 2003. I strive to make wines that are ripe and powerful yet food friendly and moderate in alcohol. We grow traditional Napa varieties like Cabernet and Chardonnay as well as less common varieties such as Ribolla Gialla and Cabernet Franc.

Honors / Awards:
Winemaker of the Year, Food & Wine Magazine and San Francisco Chronicle; Six-Time James Beard Award Nominee, Slow Wine Snail Award.

Winemaking Philosophy:
Our philosophy is to focus entirely on the vineyard, growing organic grapes that naturally make balanced age-worthy wines which complement food and require a minimum of intervention in the cellar.
